A recent study conducted by the Rainforest Alliance presents several remarkable conclusions: The deforestation rate in FSC certified parts of the Guatemalan Maya Biosphere Reserve is 20 times lower than in other parts, where harvesting is strictly prohibited. And wildfires affected only 0.1% of the FSC-certified areas, compared to 7-20 % of the non-certified areas.
The rate of deforestation was found to be as much as 20 times lower than in other parts of the reserve, where harvesting is strictly prohibited. In addition, wildfires occurred in only 0.1 per cent of the FSC-certified areas, while between 7 and 20 percent of the non-certified areas were affected by fire.
