Comparative analysis of certification schemes in the EU bioeconomy: sustainability, assurance, and governance requirements
The HARMONITOR project, funded by the European Union under Horizon Europe, works to strengthen circular bio-based systems that can reverse climate change, restore biodiversity, and protect natural resources throughout supply chains. Led by SQ Consult B.V. and partners including DBFZ German Biomass Research Center, Utrecht University, Radboud University, Biomass Technology Group, Rina, agroVet, Global Risk Assessment Services, and Preferred by Nature, the project focuses on improving the effectiveness of certification schemes and labels in different sectors of the EU Bioeconomy and strengthen their use as a co-regulation instrument.
Preferred by Nature examined ten major certification schemes as part of this work, including FSC, Rainforest Alliance, Bonsucro, RSPO, RTRS, SBP, ISCC, and Better Cotton. The analysis looked at how well each scheme addresses practical concerns like land rights and fair trade, protects workers through labour standards and safety requirements, and guards the environment through ecosystem protection and climate action. The study also assessed how these schemes verify compliance through their auditing processes and how they're governed. This comparative work helps companies and policymakers understand which certification schemes offer robust assurance on sustainability claims and how they can be used effectively in supply chain due diligence. One key outtake is understanding what certification actually can deliver for certified businesses, and how these schemes can work within due diligence systems to help companies meet requirements like the EU Deforestation Regulation.
