Towards climate-resilient and biodiverse productive forests – A new vision for forestry
Forests are vital for sustaining life on Earth — they store carbon, protect biodiversity, and sustain livelihoods. Yet, traditional management approaches often fall short in ensuring long-term resilience.

To protect our forests for the future, we must act now. By applying the best available knowledge and practices to future-proof them, we can keep our forest resilient, biodiverse, and productive for generations to come.
Join us at our 10th FSC General Assembly side event to introduce a pioneering, science-based framework for climate and biodiversity-smart forest management. The initiative collaborates with Preferred by Nature, IKEA, and the European Forest Institute (EFI).
The framework combines scientific knowledge, traditional practices, and innovative silvicultural methods, such as closer-to-nature forestry and continuous cover forestry, along with other techniques to improve forest resilience, biodiversity, and carbon storage. It also aims to maintain sustainable timber production at a reasonable cost. The framework’s first implementation covers 16,000 hectares of IKEA-owned forests in Latvia, providing a model that can be replicated for sustainable forest management worldwide.
