Towards climate-resilient and biodiverse productive forests – A new vision for forestry
Forests are essential for life on Earth — they store carbon, nurture biodiversity, and sustain communities. Yet they are increasingly threatened by climate change and unsustainable management.

To protect our forests for the future, we must act now. By applying the best available knowledge and practices, we can future proof our forests so they remain resilient to climate change and continue to provide the ecosystem functions that people and biodiversity depend on.
Join us at our 10th FSC General Assembly side event to explore a new science-based framework for climate and biodiversity smart forest management. The initiative is developed in collaboration between Preferred by Nature, IKEA, and the European Forest Institute (EFI).
The event will take place in Panama City and will also be accessible online via Zoom for registered virtual participants.
This framework brings together scientific research, traditional practices, and innovative silvicultural techniques such as closer to nature and continuous cover forestry. It aims to enhance forest resilience, biodiversity, and carbon storage while maintaining productive forestry at a reasonable cost.
The first implementation covers 16,000 hectares of IKEA-owned forests in Latvia, providing a practical model that can be adapted to different forest contexts around the world.
What to expect
The session will explore how this approach complements FSC certification and supports the ongoing development of sustainability standards. It highlights how FSC can lead the way in future proofing forests and strengthening their role in global climate and biodiversity efforts.
Who should attend?
- FSC members and certificate holders
