This study was developed by the European Forest Institute (EFI), with funding from the European Union's Sustainable Cocoa Programme (SCP), and under the aegis of Cameroon's Sustainable Cocoa Committee. It was produced with the technical support of a consortium of legal and due diligence experts, including TAMI International Consulting and Preferred by Nature, and with input from stakeholders in the cocoa supply chain in Cameroon.

The study follows the EFI framework (list of indicators) and methodology.

This information has been produced in the context of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) adopted in May 2023. This regulation requires operators and traders importing forest-risk commodities into the EU to demonstrate that these products are traceable, deforestation-free and legal. Entry into application is scheduled for 31 December 2025. Operators placing cocoa or derived products on the EU market will have to ensure that these have been produced in accordance with the relevant legislation of the country of production.

The results provided are not legally binding, do not commit any actor concerned, and do not constitute legal advice. The results of this study provide recommendations that can support operators and other players in the industry in this direction.

An interactive visual has been produced to complement the reports produced as part of the study to support due diligence under the EUDR for cocoa produced in Cameroon. For more details on the background, objectives and methodology, please refer to the report on legal requirements as well as the report on due diligence recommendations.

The assessment is also published on our Sourcing Hub as well as on EFI’s Legality Navigator.
