Ecosystem Restoration and Carbon Initiatives: An Immersive Learning Experience in the Borneo Rainforest

Experience ecosystem restoration and nature-based carbon initiatives where they happen.

Join us for an immersive five-day learning experience in the heart of Borneo's majestic Maliau Basin, also known as the "Lost World of Sabah." Surrounded by one of the world's most biodiverse tropical rainforest landscapes, you'll learn from leading restoration and carbon experts while exploring restoration and carbon initiatives in the field.

During the course, you will:

  • Learn from expert-led sessions and collaborative case studies.
  • Experience the Maliau Basin Conservation Area (MBCA) firsthand through field-based activities in the rainforest and surrounding area.
  • Explore restoration and carbon initiatives through selected field visits and practical exercises.
  • Apply ecosystem restoration and nature-based carbon concepts to real-world scenarios.
  • Connect and exchange perspectives with restoration and sustainability professionals from around the world.

Why does it matter?

Healthy ecosystems are essential for biodiversity, climate resilience, and human well-being, yet ecosystems around the world continue to face increasing degradation. As global efforts to restore landscapes and scale nature-based climate solutions accelerate, professionals with practical expertise in ecosystem restoration and carbon initiatives are in growing demand.

What will I gain?

Through a combination of classroom learning and field-based activities, you will develop practical skills to:

  • Assess ecosystem restoration opportunities and project contexts.
  • Plan and support restoration initiatives using an integrated approach.
  • Apply the Preferred by Nature Ecosystem Restoration Standard.
  • Explore the principles and practical considerations of nature-based carbon initiatives.
  • Evaluate environmental, social, and economic considerations relevant to restoration and carbon projects.
  • Engage with restoration and sustainability professionals and exchange perspectives on practical challenges and opportunities.

Is it for me?

Designed for sustainability professionals, conservation practitioners, project developers, consultants, auditors, researchers, and policymakers, this course provides practical knowledge and tools to assess, support, and advance ecosystem restoration and nature-based carbon initiatives across a wide range of professional contexts.
